UGs/SCORs/Friends,
Duane Smith (aka The Hammer of TCOTSerF) crossed the Jordan November 3, 2009. His ex, Caroline, called me this morning with the news. She said he committed suicide as long planned and left things well organized. Some of his family and some of her family are coming in for support. I cannot go because of the situation in Colorado Springs.
Duane was/is one of my best friends (and sometime student and business partner). I first met him in September 1987 when I was the faculty advisor to the newly reactivated Epsilon Delta Pi at Central Texas College and he was the appointed president in charge of the reactivation.
At the time, he was still a biker (BMWs): over 300 pounds, red beard and hair with long pony tail. He and I hit if off and became pretty much immediately the best of friends. Shortly we were working together as student and teacher and business partners (beginning with an IBM contract engineered by Don Raines (El LoCoBo) to write various reports on activities at the 1988 COMDEX in Las Vegas, we formed Endicott Smith Associates).
I left CTC in May of 1992 but our business association continued until 2000 when we dissolved the partnership. We continued as good friends up til (and beyond?) his death. He was a great travel and party companion. We travelled together all over the U.S., and prior to GPS were frequently lost - he managed to get us lost one time driving from Temple, Texas, to Texas A&M - his best effort (there is only one highway from Temple to Aggieville - plus we were lost one time after GPS due to Duane setting it wrong).
I miss him.

Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home
I looked over Jordan, and I what did I see
Coming for to carry me home?
A band of angels coming after me
Coming for to carry me home
If you get there before I do
Coming for to carry me home
Tell all my friends I coming too
Coming for to carry me home
I'm sometimes up, I'm sometimes down
Coming for to carry me home
But still my soul feels heavenly bound
Coming for to carry me home
