~ALISON BRACKENBURY
What had I heard
In the tall pine’s top, that cold Bank Holiday?
Was it a bird?
But what could fill the air
With a rattle, whirling like an army?
I should not have been there
On the green switchback paths the shooters trod.
White butterflies blew soundlessly.
Black deer sprang through the bog
Where I could not follow.
Woodpecker, buzzard, crake,
Rang in my skull’s round hollow
That sound no bird can make.
